Imam Ali Bin Abu Talib — 1st Imam

oposal from Prophet Muhammad to marry his daughter Fatima Fatemeh c. 1568 - Amaana.orgAli Bin Abu Talib (11-40/632-661), 1st Imam

“Ali, the son of Abu Talib and the cousin of the Prophet was born on Friday, the 13th Rajab in the 28th year of A’am al-fil (the year of elephants) or 600 A.D. inside Kaba in Mecca. He was brought up under the subtle care and affection of the Prophet. Ali himself cherished the memory of his childhood by saying: “The Prophet brought me up in his own arms and fed me with his own morsel. I followed him, wherever he went, like a baby-camel which follows its mother. Each day a new aspect of his character would beam out of his noble person and I would accept it and follow it as commanded.” Ibn Abid Hadid (d. 655/1257) quotes Ibn Abbas as… Continue reading

Imam Ali and the Power of Compassion — Dr. Reza Shah-Kazemi

Imam Hazrat AliDr. Reza Shah-Kazemi Yawm-e Ali lecture Video delivered at the Ismaili Centre, London

The 2010 Yawm-e Ali Lecture at the Ismaili Centre, London was delivered on 14 July, 2010 by Dr Reza Shah-Kazemi, Research Fellow at The Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. In his lecture titled Imam Ali and the Power of Compassion, Dr. Shah-Kazemi explored the role played by Rahma — divine compassion — in the teachings of Hazrat Ali.

He stressed the relationship between intellect and compassion as one of the key polarities in the thought of Imam Ali. Just as the operation of the intellect requires the participation of all the cardinal virtues — compassion above all others, says Dr Shah-Kazemi, likewise, the deeper meaning and transformative power of the virtue of compassion can only… Continue reading

Imam and Imamat — Allama Hunzai

Ayatul Kursi - Throne Verse, Quran 2:255 - Amaana.org

Imam and Imamat

By Prof. Dr. Allama Nasir al Din Nasir Hunzai

In his firman to Surat Jamat on 12th October, 1903, NOOR Mowlânâ Sultân Muhammad Shâh (a.s.) said “If you always read religious books, you will come to know that the throne of Imamat is continuous, perpetual and everlasting.” Therefore, the subjects of Imam and Imamat are of paramount importance for all believers of God.

The verse (36:12) reveals that God has encompassed everything – intellectual, spiritual and physical – in the light of the most noble Imam. Therefore, according to the principles of Qur’anic wisdom, it is clear that all subjects are contained in the subject of Imâmat and all words in the word Imâm. Prophet Muhammad Birthday Mevlut

Prophet Muhammad and Imam Ali Reunited Manuscript Punjab 1686 - Amaana.orgProphet Muhammad Birthday Milad un Nabi — Mevlût

By Annemarie Schimmel

In the Turkish tradition, the best-known early mevlût was written by Süleyman Chelebi of Bursa around 1400. But more than a century earlier, Yunus Emre had already promised heavenly reward to those who recite mevlût, which shows — provided the verses are genuine — that mevlûts were popular among the Turks at a rather early stage. Süleyman Chelebi’s poem is written in rhyming couplets, a literary from adopted from the Persian. Its rhythm is simple; the meter is the same as that used primarily in Persian mystical and didactic epics such as ‘Attar’s Mantiq ut-tair and Rumi’s Mathnawi. The language is plain, almost childlike, and therefore the poem has not lost anything of its charm even today. (But even this poem was considered… Continue reading

Lady Fatima Zahra, Prophet Muhammad’s Daughter

Prophet Muhammad giving Fatima in marriage to Ali - Siyer-Nabi, Amaana.orgFatima Az-Zahra (a.s.)

By Syed H. Akhtar

When writing about the greatness of a personality, one needs a gold standard with which to compare the strengths and weaknesses of that individual. However, if that person is herself the gold standard, then it makes it impossible to adequately describe her greatness. Hazrat Fatima az-Zahra (A) was such a personality. Her merits are unmatched by any woman known in history and Allah swt himself testifies in the Qur’an about her purity and piety.

It is related that Imam Jafar As-Sadiq (A) said: “Fatima has nine names near (to) Allah swt, they are: Fatima, As-Siddiqa (the honest), Al-Mubarakah (the blessed one), At- Tahirah (virtuous), Az-Zakiyah (the chaste), Ar-Radhiyatul-… Continue reading

Quran, 13:28

ألا بِذِكْرِ اللهِ تَطمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

“Verily! In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find contentment.” - Quran, 13:28

Prophet Muhammad

Prophet Muhammad:

‘Ali is ‘as my own soul’ (ka-nafsi).

He said to ‘Ali, ‘You are from me and I am from you (anta minni wa ana minka).’

‘Truly, ‘Ali is from me and I am from him (inna ‘Ali minni wa ana minhu), and he is the wali (patron/spiritual master) of every believer after me.’

Hazrat Ali

12. When some blessings come to you, do not drive them away through thanklessness.

13. He who is deserted by friends and relatives will often find help and sympathy from strangers.

Imam Ali Sayings

Imam Jaffer Sadiq

“Nothing occurs in this earth and in the heaven except with the following seven stages: Will, intention, destiny, decree, permission, book and implementation. Then whoever thinks that he can reduce any of these stages, then indeed he has disbelieved.”

- Imam Jaffer Sadiq, Usul al Kafi, vol. 1, p. 149

Rumi on Ramadan

The month of fasting has come, the emperor’s banner has arrived; withhold your hand from food, the spirit’s table has arrived. The soul has escaped from separation and bound nature’s hands; the heart of error is defeated, the army of faith has arrived. Fasting is our sacrifice, it is the life of our soul; let us sacrifice all our body, since the soul has arrived as guest. Fortitude is as a sweet cloud, wisdom rains from it, because it was in such a month of fortitude that the Koran arrived. …Wash your hands and your mouth, neither eat nor speak; seek that speech and that morsel which has come to the silent ones.

Aga Khan jokes

Aga Khan Speech Brown University May 1996:

"Looking around this colorful gathering, I recall helping in the choice of the Aga Khan University's regalia. Our research into Islamic traditions of academic dress revealed that an academic's rank determined the height of his hat. The higher the rank, the taller the hat. The senior most professors therefore appeared taller than their students even when sitting down. I have just learnt that my friend Neil Rudenstein, the President of Harvard has given instructions that all Harvard hats are to be heightened by at least a foot. This has caused havoc in the Ivy League which is now debating resolution MAHH96, standing for Maximum Allowable Hat Height. My academic standing and that of President Gregorian, should be evident from the hats that we are presently wearing!"
