Layla tul Qadr – The Night of Power

Sura Qadr in Farsi

Layla tul Qadr falls on the 23rd of Ramadan and this is a significant event in Muslim history as not only did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) receive his first revelation that culminated in the Holy Quran, but this day marks the anniversary of his Prophethood on earth. Muslims all over the world spend this night in prayers as it holds special Barakah for those in prayer.

“In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful

“Indeed We sent it [the Holy Quran] down on the Night of Power. What will convey to you what the Night of Power is? Better is the Night of Power than a thousand months. In that Night the angels and the Spirit descend by the permission of their Lord for every errand. Peace it… Continue reading

Prophet Muhammed enthroned in heaven attended by Angels

Prophet Muhammad Collection on the Ismaili Web

As the Ismaili Web has grown during the past twenty years, the material I have gathered on our beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has been spread over many pages. I decided to create this page to portray all the files in one place for Milad Day. Hope this is useful. “And We have not sent you except as a Mercy to Mankind” – Sura Al-Anbiyah 21:107

Salwaat – Blessings and Greetings of Peace

“Verily Allah sends blessings upon the prophet, and his angels ask Allah to bless him. Oh you who have believed ask Allah to send blessings upon him and greet him with peace” – Sura Al-Ahzab 33:56

Love for Imam Ali in the Quran and Sunnah

Love for Imam Ali in the Quran and Sunnah

By Reza Shah-Kazemi

Chapter 10:

What we have said so far has shed light on the value and influence of love, and it has incidentally become clear that love for the pure ones is a means for the reform and refinement of the soul, not that it is an end in itself. Now we must see whether Islam and the Qur’an have chosen someone we should love or not. When the Quran relates what the previous prophets have said, it points out that they have all said: “we do not ask a wage from people, our only reward is from God. “However it addresses the Seal of the Prophets thus:

Say: “I do not ask of you a wage for this,… Continue reading

Importance of Imam Ali for All Muslims – Reza Shah Kazemi

Imam Hazrat Ali

The Importance of Imam Ali for All Muslims

By Dr. Reza Shah Kazemi

By analyzing original sources, the author explores the wisdom of Imam ‘Ali which has been described as an intellectual treasure locked in the Arabic language.

“One of the things I tried to do in this book”, said Dr Shah-Kazemi, “is to make some of the jewels of this treasury of spiritual wisdom accessible to those who cannot read Arabic. And to make that timeless spiritual wisdom speak across the ages in a dialect which is intelligible to contemporary readers.”

In Part One, the author describes the spiritual and ethical dimensions of Imam ‘Ali’s teachings. The second chapter sheds light on the ‘Sacred Conception of Justice’ in his teachings while the third segment focuses on ‘Realisation through Remembrance’.… Continue reading

Sayings of Imam Hazrat Ali

Imam Hazrat Ali - Amaana.org

Sayings of Imam Hazrat Ali

1. During civil disturbance adopt such an attitude that people do not attach any importance to you – they neither burden you with complicated affairs, nor try to derive any advantage out of you.

2. He who is greedy is disgraced; he who discloses his hardship will always be humiliated; he who has no control over his tongue will often have to face discomfort.

3. Avarice is disgrace; cowardice is a defect; poverty often disables an intelligent man from arguing his case; a poor man is a stranger in his own town; misfortune and helplessness are calamities; patience is a kind of bravery; to sever attachments with the wicked world is the greatest wealth; piety is the best weapon of defense.

4. Submission to Allah’s… Continue reading

In the desert of Arabia was Mohammad born, according to Muslim historians, on April 20, 571. The name means highly praised. He is to me the greatest mind among all the sons of Arabia. He means so much more than all the poets and kings that preceded him… Continue reading

Birthday of Prophet Muhammad

By Amir Gulamhusein

In the Presidential Address given at the International Seerat Conference held in Karachi, Pakistan on 12th March 1976, Mawlana Hazar Imam (s.a.) said:

In the face of this changing world, which was once a universe to us and is now no more than an overcrowded island, confronted with a fundamental challenge to our understanding of time, surrounded by a foreign fleet of cultural and ideological ships which have broken loose, I ask, do we have a clear, firm and precise understanding of what Muslim Society is to be in times to come? And if, as I believe, the answer is uncertain, where else can we search than in the Holy Qur’an, and in the example of Allah’s last and final Prophet?”

The Origins of Shi’ism: A Consensus of Western Scholarship – by Jonah Winters

Quran Verse 10-35
by Jonah Winters

Say: “It is Allah Who guides to the truth. Is then He, Who gives guidance to the truth, more worthy to be followed,..?” Qur’an: 10:35

Editor’s note: In this article, Jonah Winters refers to the Shia who are Twelvers whose Imams stopped after the twelfth Imam and has not included the Shia whose Imams descended from Prophet Muhammad and Hazrat Imam Ali and continue in the present Living Imam the 49th in the lineage, Hazar Imam Karim Al Husayni Aga Khan. So as he admits in his conclusion, he has not had the full historical story of the Shia either. But the article is an excellent one and should be read by all to bring about understanding of our unique traditions. He says “…I approach the… Continue reading

Prophet Muhammad receiving the first revelation of the Holy Quran from Angel Gabriel at Mount Hira in Mecca

The Prophetic Paradigm: Compassionate Forbearance

To speak about the intellectual search for knowledge, therefore, is also, and inescapably, to speak about the pursuit of virtue, and it is here that the paradigm of prophetic perfection is of the utmost importance: ‘I was raised up as a Prophet to perfect the most noble traits of character (makārim al-akhlāq)’,[1] the Prophet said, in an allusion to the principle that understanding the message of divine oneness—the conveyance of which was the chief reason for his being ‘raised up’ as a prophet—both requires… Continue reading

Ramadan Kareem and Eid ul-Fitr – Eid Mubarak!

Let life happen and be thankful to Allah

Do not dwell on the negative as it will soon come to pass
Islamic Arabic Calligraphy – Let life happen and be thankful to Allah Do not dwell on the negative as it will soon come to pass

The great Muslim poet Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi’s Ramadan poems 13th century AD:

“O moon-faced Beloved,
the month of Ramadan has arrived.
Cover the table
and open the path of praise.”

“The month of fasting has come, the emperor’s banner has arrived; withhold your hand from food, the spirit’s table has arrived.

The soul has escaped from separation and bound nature’s hands; the heart of error is defeated, the army of faith has arrived.

Fasting is our sacrifice, it is the life of our soul; let us sacrifice all our body, since the soul has arrived as guest.

Fortitude is as a sweet cloud, wisdom… Continue reading

I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate – Ana madinatu’l-ilm wa Ali babuha

I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate Ana madinatul ilm wa Ali babuha

I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate;
so whoever desires knowledge, let him enter the gate.
(Ana madinatu’l-ilm wa Ali babuha;
Fa-man arada’l-ilm fal-ya til-bab).1

This profound Hadith, (saying of the Prophet) recorded by Muslims of every theological school, shows the unique place given by Prophet Muhammad to Hazrat Imam Ali, who, married to the Prophet’s daughter, Bibi Fatima, was also cousin to the Holy Prophet; Abdul Mutalib was their common grandfather.

Imam Ali did not fail the Prophet in this position of gate of the Prophet’s knowledge as evidenced by the vibrant spiritual traditions descending from him in the esoteric practice of Islam in Sunni and Shia followers.

The Quran highlights the Prophet’s spiritual and material behavior in 68:4: ‘Verily, thou art… Continue reading

Quran, 13:28

ألا بِذِكْرِ اللهِ تَطمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

“Verily! In the remembrance of Allah do hearts find contentment.” - Quran, 13:28

Prophet Muhammad

Prophet Muhammad:

‘Ali is ‘as my own soul’ (ka-nafsi).

He said to ‘Ali, ‘You are from me and I am from you (anta minni wa ana minka).’

‘Truly, ‘Ali is from me and I am from him (inna ‘Ali minni wa ana minhu), and he is the wali (patron/spiritual master) of every believer after me.’

Hazrat Ali

12. When some blessings come to you, do not drive them away through thanklessness.

13. He who is deserted by friends and relatives will often find help and sympathy from strangers.

Imam Ali Sayings

Imam Jaffer Sadiq

“Nothing occurs in this earth and in the heaven except with the following seven stages: Will, intention, destiny, decree, permission, book and implementation. Then whoever thinks that he can reduce any of these stages, then indeed he has disbelieved.”

- Imam Jaffer Sadiq, Usul al Kafi, vol. 1, p. 149

Rumi on Ramadan

The month of fasting has come, the emperor’s banner has arrived; withhold your hand from food, the spirit’s table has arrived. The soul has escaped from separation and bound nature’s hands; the heart of error is defeated, the army of faith has arrived. Fasting is our sacrifice, it is the life of our soul; let us sacrifice all our body, since the soul has arrived as guest. Fortitude is as a sweet cloud, wisdom rains from it, because it was in such a month of fortitude that the Koran arrived. …Wash your hands and your mouth, neither eat nor speak; seek that speech and that morsel which has come to the silent ones.

Aga Khan jokes

Aga Khan Speech Brown University May 1996:

"Looking around this colorful gathering, I recall helping in the choice of the Aga Khan University's regalia. Our research into Islamic traditions of academic dress revealed that an academic's rank determined the height of his hat. The higher the rank, the taller the hat. The senior most professors therefore appeared taller than their students even when sitting down. I have just learnt that my friend Neil Rudenstein, the President of Harvard has given instructions that all Harvard hats are to be heightened by at least a foot. This has caused havoc in the Ivy League which is now debating resolution MAHH96, standing for Maximum Allowable Hat Height. My academic standing and that of President Gregorian, should be evident from the hats that we are presently wearing!"
