This Persian calligraphy invokes prayers that are dedicated to our Prophet Muhammed and Hazrat Ali. I think it reads: "O Allah Give your blessings to our Prophet Muhammed and his great disciple Ali. (The Salwaat) Purify our hearts and souls, bless us all, and group us with your virtuous children"

Dear Nina:DUALITY OF FAITH: Europe uncritically accepted the duality of spirit and matter probably from Manichean thought. It best thinkers are realising this initial mistake today but its statesmen are indirectly forcing the world to accept it as an unquestionable dogma. It is, then, this mistaken separation of spiritual and temporal which has largely influenced European religious and political thought and has resulted practically in the total exclusion of Christianity from the life of European states. The result is a set of mutually ill-adjusted states dominated by interests not human but national. (2) In Islam the theologians too began to give a bewildering variety of comments on Quranic texts and even Hadith or Traditions of the Prophet were concocted, religious decrees, promulgated and FATWAS(judgements) given to suit the whims and caprices of a particular Muslim ruler.Rumi reminded Muslims: "YOU WERE SENT TO UNITE PEOPLE-YOU WERE NOT SENT TO DIVIDE PEOPLE".

Dear Nina: THE FIVE PILLARS OF BELIEF:(We ismailis and Shias believe in them): (1) Belief in one God, Allah (Surah 23:116:117). (2)Belief in angels (Surah 2:177). (3)Belief in many prophets but one message. Adam was the first prophet.Others have included Abraham,Moses,Jesus, and "the Seal of the Prophets,"Muhammad(Surah 4:136; 33:40) (4) Belief in a judgement day(Surah 15:35, 36) (5) Belief in God's omniscience, prior knowing, and determination of all events. Yet, man has freedom of choice in his actions.[Islamic sects are divided on the issue of free will] (Surah 9:51).

This is for Ignorant-Noel of Toronto I think this person has no knowledge of Quran, who said that Ismaili's do not follow Quran. We follow and understand better than any muslim. We do not read Quran in Arabic but we read it in english I know so many Ismailis who do. Mr Noel of Toronto do you know what Quran says regarding your opinion or any sunis who think in this way, nobody has a right to judge anybody's religion and Quran is very clear in this matter, Allah makes the judgement.

Dear Nina:DECRYING ISMAILIS AND SHIAS:Your guest columist is the type every now and then show up their ignorance. The same causes, however, which until the advent of the Prophet, had prevented the growth of the Arabs into a nation,- the same tribal jealousies, the same division of clan and clan, the mark of which are still visible throughout the Muslim world-led eventually, not only ruin of the Republic, but also downfall of Muslim Empire.Mulsim world has been rent with intestine divisions and strifes. Differences of opinion on abstract subjects, about which there cannot be any cetitude in a finite existence, has always given rise to greater bitterness and a fiercer hostility than ordinary differences on matters within the range of human cognition. The old tribal quarrels, strong feelings of jealousy which animated the other Koreishites against the family of Hashim.WOULD YOUR COLUMNIST DEFINE WHO A TRUE MUSLIM IS-IN THIS WORLD- WIDE UMMA?

Ya Ali Madad: I refer to the comments made by my brother Noel of Toronto, and respect them. All the human beings on this earth, pray to "Almighty" (Allah, Lord, Bhagwan, Ishwer), whether he or she is a Hindu, Christian, Muslim, etc., we all are Allah's children. Why have hatred for each other. Allah would be more happy, if we Muslim brothers and sisters, whether we are Shia or Sunni, be more united. I am sure in every religion it states that one's prayers are not acceptable if one has hatred for each other. Sayings of our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), "Do you love your Creator? Love your fellow-being first. God is One and He likes unity." May Allah Bless all the souls on this earth. Khudahafiz

Ismailism is an heretic and a blasphemic anti muslim sect. Everything on them is different than the muslims and they do not believe in the quran. In my opinion all the ismailis and the ghulats (shiites that say that Ali is God) are all going to hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALLAH will not forgive this mushrik and damned people.

Dear Nina:(May I?) QURAN AND THE BIBLE:(SOME COMMON..) "He has revealed to you the Book with the truth, confirming the scriptures which preceded it: for He has already revealed the Torah and the Gospal for the guidance of men, and the distinction between right and wrong." Surah 3:2.- "Almost all historical narratives of the Quran have their bibical parallels...Among the Old Testamnet characters, Adam,Noah,Abraham(mentioned about 70 times in twenty-five different surahs and having his name as a title for surah 14), Ishmael,Lot,Joseph(to whom surah 12 is dedicated). Moses(whose name occurs in thirty-four different surahs),Saul,Davis,Solomon,Elijah,Job and Jonah(whose name surah 10 bears) figure prominently. The story of the creation and fall of Adam is cited five times, the flood eight and sodom eight. In fact the Quran shows more paralleelism to the Pentateuch than any other part of the Bible. -"Of the New Testament characters Zachariah, John the Baptist,Jesus('Isa) and Mary are the only ones emphasised. "A comparativre study of the...Quranic and bibical narratives... reveals no verbal dependence [no direct quotation]."

Dear Nina: SHORT GLIMPSES OF HOLY QURAN:The Holy Quran was revealed to Muhammad by angel Gabriel.THE HADITH,or SUNNA,"the deeds, utterances and silent approval (taqrir) of the Prophet...fixed during the second century(A.H.) in the form of written hadiths. A HADITH, therefore, is a record of an action or sayings of the Prophet."It can also be applied to the actions or sayings of any Prophet's "Companians or their successors." In a HADITH, only the meaning is viewd as inspired. THE SHARI'AH. or canon law based on principles of the Quran regulates a Muslim's centre life in the rleigious, political, and social senses. "All man's act are classified under five legal catagories:(1) What is considered absolute duty(fard)[involving reward for acting or punishment for failing to act];(2)Commandable or maritorious actions(mustahabb)[involving a reward but no punishment for omissions];(3)permissible actions(ja'iz mubah), which are legally indifferent;(4)reprehensible actions(makruh), which are disapproved but not punishable;(5) forbidden actions(haram), the doing of which calls punishment.

Dear Nina:(May I!) IMAM HAS CHARTED THE COURSE OF OUR HAPPINESS:(Birth Day- 13th December 1998).What is the underlying motive of human existence? To answer"WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM LIFE?". We would agree that in our every day effort,in our every action, we are striving for happiness. For it is undisputable philosophical fact that man, be he sinner or saint, in his every action, be in unpardonable sin, hunt for wealth, look for love, attempt to climb ephemeral of fame or be meditation of God, he is looking for unabating, everlasting happiness. That is why since time immemorial has asserted that an incentive to human action is search for happiness.Despite this life-long search, just as man is born crying and lives all his life complaining, so does he usually die dispappointed. Of all things in life, one then ponders:"IS ETERNAL HAPPINESS JUST A DAY DREAM OR IS IT A PRACTICAL REALITY?

Dear Nina:WHO NEEDS REFORMS: Ismailism does not need to be reformed. Institutions and administrative machinery through which institutions operate can and have been modified or totally replaced by other better structured to meet the need of change BUT THIS IS NOT REFORMING THE FAITH.Imam of the Age reigns wupreme. HE ALONE has the authority to guide the spiritual welfare of his followers. If you choose to remian an Ismaili, any other stand would be incongruous and in direct conflict with the spiritual bond which your oath of allegiance to your Imam enjoins upon you. Throughout history Imamm of age has sought "advice" from his appointed officers in matters which affect the welfare of his followers.

Dear Nina:PART I(Space!)MIRADJ RAAT: On Sunday 15th we are celebrating MIRADJ RAAT-Ascension of Prophet to heaven. In Kuran, Sura lxxxi, 19-25 and liii. 1-12, a vision is described in which a heavenly messanger appears to Muhammad and Sura liii. 13-18 deals with a second vision of a similar kind.In both cases the Prophet sees a heavenly figure approach him from the distance. Sura xvii.I:"Praise him, who travelled in one night with his servant from the Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aksa, whose surrounding we blessed , in order to show him our signs".There are many other versions of the incident.

MIRADJ RAAT(Part II)"When Prophet had received his revalation and was sleeping in Kaaba, the angels Gabriel and Michael came to him. They brought water of Zamam well washed him. Then they brought golden vassel which was filled with wisdom and belief. His body was filled with these and taken up to lowest heaven. The ascension of the Prophet later served as a model for the description of thre journey of the soul to the divine judge.Sufis take it as a symbol of the rise of soul from bonds of sensuality to the height of mystic knowledge. Then there is Burak is given wings with- as female beast.Prophet traverses through seven heavens:In each heaven they meet one of earlier messangers of God:Adam in the first;Yahya and Issa in the second;Yusuf in the third;Idris in the fourth;Harun in the fifth; Musa in the sixth and Ibrahim in the seventh.

Dear Nina:INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT NOT AGAINST ISLAM: The American scientist Draper, in his:"History of the Intellectual Development of Europe" deeply deplored that European literature had systematically endeavoured to make West forget its scientific debt to the Muslims, and that it was certainly time to recognise that.Even Comte de Gobineau, who was not too sympathetic in his view of Islam, wrote in his works:"Les religions et les philosophies dans l'Asie Centrale" that it is difficult to share the opnion of those who want to see in the Muslim dogma a direct obstacle to inellectual development. The contrary seems to be more defendable. The religion that pronounced this formula:"The ink of the savants is more precious than the blood of martyrs" that supported and maintained material prosperity until sixteenth century by such a scientific and literary state, cannot be aginst intellectual development.

Dear Nina:GREAT NEED OF THE HOUR:PEACE-PEACE-PEACE:The problem of human strife is as old as man. It had beginning on the outkirts of Eden when Cain, driven by envy, murdered his more devout brother, Abel. Men fought then as now: primarily because strife was inherent in the natures. Someone pointed out that in past four thousand years there has been less than three hundered years of peace. Even the most optimistic person is forced to admit that there is something seriously wrong with a world that has such a passion for destruction. If a man sent from Mars to report on earth's major business, he would have to say that "war" was the earth's chief industry: earth's people are too quarrelsome to get along with each other and too selfish to live peacefully together.

Dear Nina; HAZARAT ALI:  It seems your browser wants to know more about Imam HAZARAT ALI; but space forbid it. HAZARAT ALI b. Abi Talib was a cousin and the son-in-law of Muhammad and the fourth orthodox caliph. His father was ABU TALIB son of Abd al-Muttalib b. Hashim; his mother was called Fatima bint Asad b.Hashim. ALI received the surname Abu Turab from Muhammad, whose daughter Fatima he married.ALI accompanies Muhammad in battles of BADR,UHUD,al-KHANDAK, and nearly all expedition except that of Tabuk, during which he had the command at MMADINA in the absence of Muhammad .He himself conducted an expidition to FADAK. He received sixteen wounds at UHUD. The Prophet sent him to Mina(630) to read in public several verses from the ninth Sura(al-Bara'a) which had been revealed to him shortly and to proclaim four decisions:Prohibition of polythesists from the pilgrimage; to circumambulation of the Kaba which no one was to make unclothed; to entrance of the Muslims into Paradise and to the observation of time granted for their conversion.
