Dear Nina: USE OF YOUR WEBPAGE-GUESTBOOK: I tend to agree with your complainants and am flummoxed that you allow me much leeway for my submissions. Also am of an opinion that these browsers, if they were not careful, they might learn a thing or two from it. And that they too might have a word or two to share their knowledge with others-let them.

Dear Nina: OUR BELOVED SPIRITUAL FATHER:HAZAR IMAM-SHAH KARIM AGA KHAN IV)-Part I-Early years:His Highness Karim Aga Khan is the eldest son of His Serene Highness Prince Aly Khan and Princess Tajudaulla. He was born in Switzerland on 13th day of December,1936.The early days of his infancy were spent in Europe under the devoted care of his parents and the personal supervision of his far sighted grandfather,His late Highness Sir Sultan Mohamed Shah Aga Khan III.During the scond world war, whilst his father was on active military service, His Highness with his mother and brother Aminmohamed came to reside in Nairobi. Even in those days, he paid regular visits to the Jamatkhana and received rigorous religious training. At the age of seven, he led the Id-ul-Fitr prayers in Nairobi. When the war ended, His Highness returned to Switzerland and went to school at Le Rosey. Later, he went to Harvard University and it was whilst he was on his summer vacation in London, that he was called to the bedside of his late grandfather in Versoix. His Highness accompanied by his brother Aminmohamed visited Uganda in September 1954 where under orders of his late grandfather, he announced important constitutional changes in the Ismaili Community.(Dear Nina:To publish is at your discretion).

Dear Nina:(Abridged):PIRS OF SIND (Part-2): She said that her son Ibrahim had been taken by Pit Pagaro and held in inner citadel.Government took action(The British Government). They found the mudered woman's son Ibrahim-"the boy in the box".Pir Pagaro and four accomplices were charged-this was in 1930. He engaged counsel to defend him; the best counsel in the land- Mr. Mohamedali Jinah, who twenty-seven years later was to bring into being the new sovereign state of Pakistan. For all his great brilliance there was nothing that Mr. Jinnah could do to secure his clients acquital.Pir Sibghatulla "the first accused" and four of his men were convicted and sentensed. The Sukkar courtroom was hushed as Mr. Udhamram, the City Magitrate, read out his judgement.."This Ibrahim..(Lack of space I am unable to quote the full judgement).A sentence of five years rigorous imprisonment plus a fine in case of Pir. He was released in 1936.During second world war he was under surveillance and confined to Karachi.By the end of year a wave of Hur crime and terrorism had swept over Sind that had no parellel even in the blackest days of Hur brotherhood. In may 1942 Hur derailed Lahor Mail Train, butchering sixty three passengers of inspired brutality. On June 1,1942 martial law waa declared. In January 1943 Pir Sibghatulla was arrested and put on trial by court martial. He was sentenced to death and hanged. After Pakistan was created,it brooded until 1952 and allowed a young man-a student in England-to be recognised as seventh Pir Syed Shah-L-Mardan of Hur.(Brief extract from my book:"The Third World:Paradox of Civilization".)

Dear Nina: SHA'ISTA KHAN- A NOBLE VICEROY: Amir-ul-Umara Nawab Sha'ista Khan, the Mughal Viceroy of Bengal, ruled the province so efficiently and affectionately that he succeeded in bringing down the pricfe of rice at two annas per maund. When the noble Viceroy retired after a long and loving service to Bengal and started for Delhi, he caused the folllowing inscription to be engraved on the western gate of Jahanginagar(Dacca): "Let only him open this gate who can show the selling rate of rice as cheap as two annas per maund." Only about a century later it was posssible for Nawab Sarfarz Khan, another Viceroy of Bengal, to open the gate again.Night of Bengal.

Dear Nina:SULTAN MAHMUD AND A SAINT:Sultan Mahmud of Gazna one day went to Kharkan, a village in the suburb of Samarkand, in order to pay visit to the celebrated saint Sheikh Abul Hasan. He sent a man requesting him to come out of his cell and attend his audiance. When the Sultan's envoy delived the message to the Sheikh, he replied,"I am so deeply engrossed in carrying out the commandments of the Great King above that I regret I have no time for the king below." When the Sultan heard this, he felt touched and said,"Rise we may go for him: for he is not the kind of man we took him for". The Sultan went to the Sheikh's cell and greeted him. The Sheikh returned the greetings, but did not rise from his seat. The Sultan asked for some advice. The Sheikh said,"Be abstemious, offer prayer in mosque, practice charity and have affection for your people."Sultan asked for the blessings. Then Sultan placed a bag of coins before the saint. The Sheikh took out for him a barley cake and said to Sultan,"eat."The Sultan chewed amounthful but could not swallow it. The Sheikh observed ,"Just as the barley cake stuck to your throat, so also the gold you offer me will stick in my throat.Take the bag and distribute among the poor."(Look forward for 2nd part-PIR OF PAGARO-Inshallah-on Thursday)"

Dear Nina:(Abridged):PIRS OF SIND: HERE IN SEHWAN WAS THE "KING OF KINGS"{Part-1), the great Qalandar Lal Shah Baz, "who was noble.holy, and knew the mysteries of god" and who died in fourteenth century at the age of one hundred and twenty years,a celibate. Syed Shah-L-Mardan Shah, Fifth Pir PAGARO died in 1922, and his fourteen year old son succeeded to the throne of Sayed Sibghtulla Shah the second, sixth Pir Pagaro. Now for the first time since Hur brotherhood had come to flower, they were to be blessed with a god who would prove worthy of them.Over the little ditrict-headqaurters town of Sukkur, with its suspension bridge and the Indus flowing by, with its biscuit factory, its clock towers, its dusty trees, the Collector of the District must have watched uneasily as the reports came in and were added to the file marked Pir Pagaro.Hur outrages were common place enough. They dealt with their people ruthlessly. Pir-jo-Goth was perhaps fifteen miles from Sukkar.Reports of brutality were circulating in Bazaar. But Sibghatulla Shah, sixth Pir Pagaro, this boy,,he was showing his mettle that he was their master.Hur saw him grow to be god with passionate, greedy devotion. They brought him their women, their sisters and wives and daughters, they nourished him upon debauchery.Men disappeared from Pir-jo-Goth and were not seen again. They saw bodies here and there; but none would dare speak. But one Sindi woman called Marium managed to slip away from Pir-jo-Goth to Sukkar to lodge a complaint with authorities.

PRAYER UNDER THE SHADOW OF THE SWORD: IN 1562 A.D. Husain Nizam Shah I, King of Ahamednagar, was attacked by Ramraja, King of Vizayangar, and Ali Adil Shah,King of Bijapur. Husain Nizam Shah was worse for his experience and retreated towards the capital. One afternoon he was closely pursued when time for offering prayer arrived. His friends represented the danger of dismounting to pray, but he disregarded their warning. The enemies were so struck by his piety and courage that they stopped at some distance to admire it.And ultimately they gave up the pursuit and returned.

Dear Nina:AGA KHAN III(Bird's eyeview-Part 5)His Highness The Right Hon. Aga Sultan Sir Mahomed Shah, G.C.S.I., G.C.I.E., G.C.V.O., G.C.M.G., the third holder of the title "Aga Khan" bestowed by the Biritsh Government, was born at Karachi on November 2, 1877. He was descended in the direct line from Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Mohamed, of Beni-Fatimite Caliphs who ruled in Egypt in the time of the Crusaders, and of the Khwaja (Khijar) dynasty in Persia. He was thus spiritual head of an Islamic sect, the Ismailis scattered over Asia,Africa and Europe estimated to run into millions. The first holder of the title of Aga Khan, Hassan Ali Shah, was born in Persia in 1800, and his royal kinsman, Fateh Ali Shah, made him Governor-General of Kerman. Incurring the displeasure of Royal Court, he fled with followers southwards and gave a great assistance to British armies both in the first Afghan war and in Napier's campaign for the conquest of Sind. Hassan Ali Shah, the first Aga Khan settled in Bombay with several thousand followers. He died there in 1881. His eldest son and successor lived to enjoy the title for only four years, being succeeded in 1885, his only son, then a lad of eight, so that the tenure of the Immamate of his son extended over nearly 70 years and he was the forty-eighth Head of the Ismaili Community.(Space permitting, next I shall give Bird's eyeview of Hazar Imam-49th Imam Shah Karim Aga Khan IV).

Dear Nina: AGA KHAN III(Bird's eyeview-Part 4)ELECTED THE PRESIDENT OF LEAGUE OF NATIONS(1937).TOOK THE GREAT CAUSE OF ALIGHAR UNIVERSITY. His Highness married in youth a cousin in her teens. There was no issue and the union was dissolved. In 1906 he married an Italian lady, Teressa Magliano, who was sculptor of merit. There was born to them a child who died in infancy and in 1910 ALY KHAN, who shared his father's love of the Turf, was born. The Begum died in 1926 and in December 1929, His Highness married Mlle. Andree Carron, a lady of much charm and ability. A son,SADRUDDIN, who has been educated mainly in the United States, was born to them. The union was dissolved in Geneva courts in 1942. He married in 1944 at Vavy Mlle, Yvette Larboursse, who has participated fully in his interests and pursuits. She nursed him with assiduous care in recurring illness of his advanced age. His Highness was made a K.C.I.E. in 1898, and promoted G.C.I.E. in 1902. He was made a G.C.S.I. in 1911 and G.C.V.O. in 1923. In 1955 he was appointed G.C.M.G. As the Indian Orders ceased to be given when power was transferred in 1947 he probably stood alone outside the Royal Family in the possession of these four Grand Crosses. In 1934 he was sworn of the Privy Council, being the first Indian other than members of the Judicial Committee to be given this honour. He was also Hon. LL.D of Cambridge University.

Dear Nina: AGA KHAN III(Bird's eyeview-Part-3) When the second War broke out he was on the Riviera, and on the Switzerland for medical treatment, remaining there throughout the war period. Apart from the immediate issue of a manifesto to his followers enjoining loyal support of Britain he was unable to play any notable share in promoting Allied aim; as he had done in the 1914-18 war. He was not seen in England until summer of 1947. There were critics who felt that he should have managed somehow to leave France for some part of the Empire he had so long served. He had, however, a succession of illness and these stood in the way of his acceptance of offers from Dehli of high diplomatic office abroad when a fixed date had been given for attainment of Indian Independemnce. He took up Persian citizenship in 1949 while remaining a British subject. A feature of Aga Khan's guidance of his followers in the later years was that of instructing them to be loyal to the countries they dwelt in. While adhering to their Islamic faith they should adopt the dress and customs of the inhabitants. He responded to many suggestions that he should write an autobiography. This was dictated at his villa above Cannes and published in 1954. It was most readable and informing narrative, marked by mellow wisdom and engaging frankness of his later years.

Dear Nina: AGA KHAN III:(Bird's eye-view)He never forgot care, skill and judgement with which his mother Lady Ali Shah guided his upbringing, and except when he was in Bombay wrote to her almost daily. Aga Khan III was still in his middle teens when the Hindu-Muslim riots broke in 1893, he gave preemptory orders to his Ismaili followers to keep out of the sanguinary quarrel. Lord Curzon nominated his to Viceroy's Legislative Council, where he asssited Lord Kitchener in his efforts to obtain increase of Imperial Service troops from Indian States. His first visit to his country was made before the end of nineteenth century and all through life he cherished the memory of the kindness of Queen Victoria. She invited him to dine and spend a night at Windsor Castle. This was the beginning of his long close personal association with successive British sovereigns, and particulasrly Edward VII. A turning point was reached in Indian constitutional history when in 1906 the Aga Khan headed a Muslim deputation to the Viceroy, Lord Minto, and stated the case of encouraging the community to abandon its obscurantist aloofness from political life. Of the All-India Muslim League he was president in the first constructive years. The Aga Khan was delegate to three sessions of the Round Table Conference in London in 1930-32.Not only Muslims appointed him their leader but he was chosen to be the chairman of the entire British-Indian delegation.

Dear Nina:LIVING LIFE ON SENTIMENTS AND APPROVAL OF OTHERS: Whatever it be,whether art or nature, which excites in us a desire to live in a way to please the world around, more harm than good arises. The private advantages we might enjoy are done away with by an overanxiety to suit our conduct to the opinion of public. We think not so much what our inward thoughts and real being are, as what we appear in the eyes of others. The virtues of the mind, and even Wisdom herself, seems to us to be without her proper reward, if she be confined to her own mind, if she be not paraded before the world and approved by others.Fading and melancholy Night.

Dear Nina: AGA KHAN III AND HIS MISSIONS: During the Turco-Italian and two Balkan wars, as on many other occasions, the Aga Khan III took the risk of incurring personal unpopularity by his efforts to soothe the fears of Indian Muslims and to induce in them a due sense of proportion. His doctrine of the value of both sides of friendship between Great Britain and the Islamic world was of crucial importance when war broke out in 1914. He was in East Africa at the time and cabled immidiately to the Jamats(Councils) of his Ismaili followers stressing the obligation to remain loyal to the British Crown. When Turkey threw in her lot with Germany he issued a manifesto to the Muslim world on the same lines. Secret missions of diplomatic importance to Egypt. Switzerland and elsewhere entrusted to His Highness and some of them yielded important results. His remarkable study of Indian and Midddle Easten affairs in"India in Transititon(1918)" was not only consistent with his port-war criticism of the severity of peace terms but had its effect on the final shaping of Indian Political reforms. It was the same spirit he laboured unceasingly to secure the mitigation ultimately obtained, of ther allied terms to Turkey.

THE RELIGION TAUGHT ME OF MASTER DESIGNER: The flowers of summer died in the fall but left behind seeds that brought bck their colourful displays in the spring. The sap in the trees went underground but months later returned to clothe the bare limbs in spring green. The woodchucks in the fields curled up in their holes and slept through the winter but were out again with the return of the warm sunny days. The pair of bluebirds that nested in the hollow iron post in out backyard flew south in the fall but returned to the same post in the spring to raise another family. I gazed up in awe at the V formations of geeze flying south and listened facinated to their continuous gabblings- and wondered what all this chatter was about. The more I learned about life, the more design I saw.And more design I saw, the more I saw the need for the Master Designer as my religion had taught me.-The Starry Night.

Dear Nina: ISMAILISM'S CARDINAL BELIEF:In the West,Ismailism is described as a religious and political movement in Islam; a branch of the Shia movement and deriving its name from Ismail (mid 8th century) son of Imam Jaffer al Sadiq. The cleavage of Mohamedans into two distinct branches follwoing the death of Holy Prophet in 632 A.D., provides some justification for such a convenient definition, through we know that the succession of Hazart Ali as the first Imam, denoted more than trasfer of sources of authority which the Holy Prophet had in his lifetime. The essential difference between two branches of Islam-namely Sunni--(the people of the Sonna or tradition) and the Shias- (etymologically meaning a stream or sect) lay the proclamations by the respective sects. The Sunnis proclaimed "THERE IS NO GOD BUT GOD AND MUHAMMAD IS THE APOSTLE OF GOD". to this Shias add "AND ALI THE COMPANION OF MUHAMMAD IS THE VICAR OF GOD."

IN TEARS OF GRATITUDE: Muhammad passed some of his infant years among Bani Saad and was nursed by Halima. Now, during his early struggle with the Meccans, the Prophet had a great fight with Bani Saad. They were defeated and many of them were taken prisoners. One of the prisoners presented herself to the Prophet and said, "I am a daughter of Halima, your nurse. Here is an old scar on my arm- the consequence of a bite by you when I carried you in my lap." The Prophet recognised the scar. Tears stood in his eyes. In tender gratitude he offered her either remain with him or to depart with rich present. She accepted the present and departed to her home.

Dear Nina:NEED FOR RELIGION: What we call the "religious atttitude" is the natural outcome of man's intellectual and biological constitution. Man is unable to explain to himself the mystery of life, the mystery of birth and death, the mystery of infinity and eternity. His reasoning stops before impregnable walls. He can therefore do two things only. The one is, give up all attampts at understanding life as a TOTALITY. In this case, man will rely upon evidence of external experiences alone and will limit his conclusions to their sphere. The grasp of TOTALITY itself remains beyond methodical equipment of human reason. The othert is the way to RELIGION. It leads man, by means of inner, mostly intuitive, experience, to the acceptance of unitary explanation of life, generally on assumption that there exists a supreme Creative Power which govern Universe according to some pre-conceived plan above and beyond human understanding.

LOVE OF ETERNITY:(The Analogy):The beauty of "SUPREME" cannot bear to remain ignored behind the curtain;a beautiful face has a horror of the veil and, if you shut the door on it, will go and appear in window. See how the tulip on the mountain-top, the the first sign of spring, pierces the rock with its stem, showing us its beauty. And you yourself when rare idea appears in your mind, you are obsessed by it and must express it in word or writing. Eternal beauty has to submit itself and emerge from the sacred regions of mystery to light up the horizons and souls.A light from her shot out over the earth and skies. She revealed hrerself in the mirror of BEINGS.A parcel of its light fell on the rose, which made nightingle sick with love. It communicated its ardour to a torch where a thousand moths had just burnt themselves. It was to her that Lailah was indebted for her charms, Lailah whose every hair bound the heart of Majnun.

Dear Nina:IMAM'S GUIDANCE ACCORDING TO CIRCUMSTANCES:The need for an absolute assertion of our declared aim to continue living as a community in all the countries of the world, as part of national community.m This does not prevent any Ismaili from taking his own advice in matter concerning his future and that of his children. Here we are concerned only with the community as a basis unit of the nation:Recognition of the fact that fragmentation of the community through hasty action or improper advice leads to weakening of the community as a whole and the emasculation of these very institutions which were created for the greatest welfare of the greatest number. Full and absolute acceptance of the assurance repeatedly given by our Imam that whatever circumstances so warrant he gives guidance and makes fermans through his appointed officers as to appropriate measures to be taken to meet exigencies of the circumstances.

Dear Nina:THE HATRED:(KOSOVO:Out of numerous articles witten to local paper,I give hereunder an abridged version of one):Over two centuries ago, English author Jonathan Swift observed:"We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another"."Hatred seems to be common denominator that underlies the massacre that almost daily seem to leave up their bloody trail in this world.Politicians and historians, on the other hand may deliberately promote prejudice and whip up hatred for political and nationalistic end. Hitler was a prime example.Prejudices often stem from ignorance concerning a certain ethnic or national group. Because of hearsay, traditional animosity, or a bad experience with one or two individuals; some may attribute negative quality to an entire race or nationality.. Once prejudice has taken root, it can blind people to truth. We hate some people because we do not know them; and we will not know them because we hate them.

This is a great webpage and I would appreciate more information. I am very interested in the differences between my sect, Sunni Hanafi, and the Shias. I have been told that it is unIslamic for a person of my sect to marry someone of the other. It would be very helpful to me if you would please mail me some information on this topic as I have heard many, many different views. Allah Hafiz.

Dear Nina:UNLIKE KOSOVO-MUSLIMS HAVE SUFFERED DEPRAVATION IN HISTORY: Mahamud Shabistari who was born in middle of seventh century A.H. in Shabistar. a town near Tabriz in Adharbaijan has written a book called :"ZABUR-I 'AJAM-.The period he lived witnessed catastrophic changes which brought about a stead decline of Muslim culture. The fall of Baghdad in 656/1258 A.D. at the hands of Halagu Khan was not a mere political defeat or the termination of a particular dynasty of Muslim kings. Only forty years after the fateful event, Islam won converts from among the grandsons of Halagu Khan and thus politically Muslims were able to regain their lost position. But in the cultural sphere the loss was so terrible that later revival in the political field could not make up for destruction of books and the indiscriminate killing of the scholars. The moral and spiritual improverishment was so great that people lost all confidence in themselves. Sheikh Sa'di (d.690 A.H.) the Poet describes the tragedy thus: O Muhammad! you will get out of your grave on the Day of Judgement; Arise now and witness the same among the people to-day. The Night-was it Betrayal?(Note:In 1912 Balkan War-Today's allies were not our friends)

THE HIDDEN TRESURE AND THE DIALECTIC OF LOVE: JAMI, the greatest Persian poet who died at Herat in 1492 used mystical definitions starting with sacred hadith, "I was a hidden Treasure" expresses Sufi dialectic of manifestation and rediscovers the Platonic dialectics of one: Absolute Beauty, free from the shackles of appearances, is only revealed of itself and by its own light. No mirror has ever reflected its features; no comb has ever dressed its hair. Its eye is not acquainted with the dust of Kohl. No nightingale had neighboured with its rose and no fly enhanced its freshness. No eye had contemplated it, even in imagination. She sang to herself of her beauty, and played herself a game of love. The Night-Jami was not God's friend:He was God's Lover.

Ya Ali Madad. My Special Prayers go for my Muslim Brothers and Sisters of Kosovo, who are at the moment, in problems. May Allah shower His Blessings on you all, and bring Peace. I wish to know, and I am sure others would like to know that whether any of the Muslim Countries, Muslim Organizations, Muslim Leaders have come forward to rescue these Muslim brothers and sisters? Have any Muslim Organizations started to collect funds for these Muslim brothers and sisters? It is extremely sad, to see them suffer. When I am about to have my lunch, I start thinking of these brothers and sisters who have been without food, shelter, etc. for days and days. Their pictures start appearing in front of me. We Muslims have to help these Muslim brothers and sisters of Kosovo. They are also waiting for help from their "Muslim Brothers and Sisters from all over the world". Khudahafiz

Dear Nina:THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS:Writer and Nobel Prize WINNER ALEKSANDR SOLZHENITSYN called the Universal Declaration the "best document" ever written by the U.N. Article 1- "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards on another in spirit of brotherhood."Artcile 3- Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person." Article 22- Everyone is entitled to the realization of the rights "indispensible for his dignity and free development of his spersonality.Brazilian sociologist Ruth Rocha expalins in plain language what Universal Declration tells us:" It doesn't matter what race you are. It doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman. It doesn't matter what language you speak, what your religion is, what your political opinions are, what country you come from or who your family is. It doesn't matter whether you are rich or poor. It doesn't matter what part of the world you come from; whether your country is a kimngdom or republic . These rights and freedom are meant to be enjoyed by everyone."

Dear Nina:(SERBIANS IN NEWS)-THE EASTERN ORTHODOX CHURCH-:Bird's Eyeview:330 A.D.The schism between Greek and Latin Christandom with founding of Constantinapole, the "New Rome" displacing the "Old Rome" as Imerial capital, sowed seeds of future ecclesiastical rivalry between Greek East and Latin West. 330-876 A.D.List of breaches of COMMUNION,no less than 203 by Constantinople with Rome over TRINITY-related theologian disputes. In 867 A.D. The SEE of Constantinople maintained its position against Rome when Pope Nicholas I challenged PHGOTIUS' elevation to the Patriarchate.Byzantine patriarch refued to bow.Nicholas excommunicated Photius; a counci at Constantinople in 867 A.D.responded by excommunivating Nicholas in turn. The immidiate issue between two SEES was matter of ecclesiastical supremacy, the LITURGY and clerical discpline. 1O54 A.D.Separation between Eastern Orthodox and Western Catholic church resulted.1378-1417 Western Christendom was divided bewtween two, then three papal obediences with rival popes located in Rome,Avignon(France) and Pisa (Italey)

Assalam alaikum hello... to all who read this ... i have a question , that we should all seriously consider very very carefully with the mind that the most compassionate and merciful God has given us. What does it mean when Ql. 19 Maryam 19 says "Only Isa the son of Mary directly entered into heaven because he is Holy." If that is so then Mohadmud is not the greatest prophet of all time but Isa Almasih. Then we should listen to Him instead , should we not??? Please think carefully and logically before answering...

Dear Nina:Madam allow me:THE MEMORY OF THAT SPRING DAY:IMAM'S HOLY DIDAR. This morning on my normal walk on pathway on Bow River bank, the surrounding was riot of colors.Although buds have't sprouted yet; but gentle breeze, the rustling of tree branches and chirping of birds and light sunshine, brought back the memory of IMAM'S HOLY DIDAR I HAD IN NAIROBI.We don't have fixed season in Kenya; but atmosphere was so gently charged that you can hear angels hovering above. Then the message came flashing that Gat IMAM is to visit Nairobi and next day give his Holy Didar. I was in Boy Scout. Jamat went wild with exuberence and happiness. Next day we were lined up near doorway of Main Jamatkhana. After wait, Imam arrived, dressed in white and we offered our salute. Imam blessed us with his hands raised. This was the moment I saw the magnatic personality, the embodiment of Panjtan Pak, my Savior: I cried and my heart chocked with emotion. Here I was face to face with my Taran-Har.

THE FEASTS IN DAYS LONG GONE BY: Here is typical letter of an invitation of an Arab gentleman of the tenth century A.D. Writes Ismail bin Abbad to a friend: " We are in company which is blessed by everything save thee. The eyes of the narcissus are open; the cheeks of the violets are ablush; the censers of lemon and orange tress are spreading their perfume--eloquent are the lutes and fragrant the cups. The fine guest-hall is open--the herald is there to announce you. By my life when thou comest--we would be in a paradise and thou wilt verily be the very centre of the pearl-string.-laila.
