This Persian calligraphy invokes prayers that are dedicated to our Prophet Muhammed and Hazrat Ali. I think it reads: "O Allah Give your blessings to our Prophet Muhammed and his great disciple Ali. (The Salwaat) Purify our hearts and souls, bless us all, and group us with your virtuous children"

Dear Nina: THE FIRST MUSLIM AMBASSADOR TO CHINA: The first Muslim embassador to China was sent in A.D. 713 by the famous Arab General KUTAYBA. When brought before the Chinese Emperor, Arab ambassador was asked to bow to him. But the Ambassador declined to perform the "kowtow", boldly declaring that he bowed only to Allah and never to a Prince. The Emperor at first grew angry and decided to punish this presumptuous attitude with death. But finally the courage of the ambassador was appreciated and he was pardoned.

Dear Nina: MUSLIM MISSIONARY IN CHINA: The Chinese Muslims were not lacking in their proselytising zeal and the conversion of the Chinese to Islam by the close of the seventeen century is due to the direct proselytising efforts of the local Chinese Muslims. But such propaganda was perfectly quiet and unobstrusive, as public methods would excite the suspicious of the government, as is supported by an interseting report which was sent to Emperor K'ien Lund in A.D.1783 by a Governor of the province of Khwang-Se.It runs thus:(shortening it):"To inform your Majesty that in our province we have arrested one adventurer named Han-Fo-Yun. When pressed he cofessed that he had been travelling in various provinces for past ten years. In one box we found thirty books, some written by himself while others in a language which no one here understands. The books are written about a Western King called Muhammad.I have examined these books. I cannot understand them. They are written bad Chinese.Han- Fo-Yen 's conduct is suspicious. I shall make serious inquiry.Meanwhile I request your Majesty to order stereotyped plates that is his possession to be burnt"...next:First Muslim Ambassador to China.

Dear Nina:THE COMING OF FIRST MUSLIMS INTO CHINA: The annals of Kwagtung thus records the coming of the first Muslims into China: At the beginning of the T'and dynasty (A.D.618-907) there came to Canton a large numbers of strangers from the kingdom of Annam, Cambodia,Madina and several other countries. These strangers worshipped Heaven and had neither statue, idol not image in their temples. The kingdom of Madina is close to that of India and it is this kingdom that the religion of these strangers which is different from that of Buddha, originated. They do not eat pork, nor drink wine. They are nowadays called Hui-Hui."....2 Next:About a Muslim Missionary in China.

Dear Nina: FARACAS OF YAMANI ISMAILIS IN NIJRAN WITH SAUDI AUTHORITY: There is B.B.C. World News Service that some confrontation took place at the Mosque at Nijran (the boader between Yaman)with Saudi police. These Yamani Ismailis are offshoot of Imams of the Mustalian with the concrealment of the child Abu al Qasim Taiyib. This branch has no revealed Imam since 1130 A.D. These Imams are concealed. Bohra community in India is a branch of the Mustalian Ismailis. At the death of al Amir, the last revealed Imam, and successor to Mustali, control and direction of the religious da'wat passed to Queen Hurra in the Yaman. She seems to have held the rank of "Hujjat".

Dear Nina:SUBJECT SHOULD DISAPPER IN THE OBJECT:Imam Said: Life in the ultimate analysis has taught me one enduring lesson. The subject should always disappear in the object. In our ordinary affections one for another, in our daily work with hand or brain, we most of us discover soon enough that any lasting satisfaction, any contentment that we can achieve, is the result of FORGETTING SELF, of merging subject with object in a harmony that is of body, mind and spirit. And in the highest realms of conciousness all who believe in Higher Being are librated from all clogging and hampering bonds of the subjective self in prayer, in rapt meditation upon and in the face of glorious radiance of eternity, in which all temporal and earthly conciousness is swallowed up and itself becomes the eternal. But as the joys of human love surpass all that riches and power may bring to man, so does that great spiritual love and enlightenment, the fruit of that sublime experience of the direct vision of reality. which is God's gift and grace.

Dear Nina:HUMANITIES and SCIENCES which are referred to as TWO cultures. If there is complete break between the TWO cultures then there is the danger that western civilization will become wholly materialistic and this would also mean that human problems may be treated as purely technical problems. This is one of the difficulties facing the world today. One of the possible causes of hunger and poverty in the world today is that the problem of the hungry and poor are considered as technical rather than human. The greatest discoveries will be made along spiritual lines. Some day people will learn that material things do not bring happiness and are little use in making men and women powerful. Then the scientists will turn their laboratories to the study of God and prayer. When that day comes, the world will see more advancement in one generation than it has seen in the last four!

Dear Nina: TEACHING RESPECT FOR AUTHORITY: Today's parents demand so little respect for authority that we actually may be lowering our children's self-esteem, knowing their limits actually appeals to children's need for predictability and security--which in turn helps them feel higher self-esteem. It is children with no sense of rules and responsibilities who grow up feeling less secure and confident. We see 6- year- olds who set their own bedtime. We see 3-year-olds whose mother try to persuade them not to misbehave by expalining how it makes Mommy feel. Children need to learn to comply with family rules, and the idea that they naturally become less cooperative as they get older is wrong. We expect children to build their academic knowledge culminatively each year. So why don't we also expect kids' behaviour to improve each year? If we don't do what it takes to get to toddler to pick up a toy, we won't have a teenager who makes his curfew.

Dear Nina:THE EARTH DAY:Tomorrow world is celebrating "Earth Day".It should be everyday. We need to return to earth what we have taken out from her. There is ongoing struggle in people between the country and the city- between ideas and feelings associated with success, ambition, excitement, the procession of multitudeds, as well as with crime and squalor, and those that tend towards an appreciation of serene majesty, passivity, mystery, solitude, pastoral virtues and a different kind of wildness. Both worlds are beautiful--city lamps on a winter night and no less attractive than a swaying kelp forest. The trouble is that the nature ussually loses in this tug-of-war, in part because it cannot compete in modern terms. We need to preserve nture,if life is going to be sutainable for the future generation. A poet said:"Let us grow a blade of grass where there grew none"A woman in Kenya, namely Wangari Maathai worried by shortage of firewood for the poor began a small tree-planting operation in late 1970s. Movement quickly spread and now evrybody listens even the President.

Dear Nina:FRUSTRATI0N AT WORK: We have noticed that many people are burnt at work. When this happens people lose their temper or even become violent at work? The reason may not be just stress but a low tolerance for frustration. This condition develops in some employees who feel they are being "asked to sell their souls at work and then discover the payoff is not proportionate to what they have given. The prolonged anger is very "a unhealthy emotion" that can lead to strokes or heart attacks. The employees must learn to accept frustrations and to sit down with their employers and calmly discuss how much work they can realistically do.On the other , employers to be alert to employees who seem to be burning out and to give extra help, relieve them of some of their load, or suggest that they take a day off. Many tragedies have resulted in this frustration. On our part attending regularly Jamatkhana and early morning "bundgi" are means to control and manage our anger and relieve of built-up tensions.

Dear Nina: ONE CHAIR FOR SOLITUDE:TO THINK:TO REMEMBER ALLAH: Most of us lead busy lives, and most of the time we probably would not have it otherwise. But I think in varying degrees we all need a little space in our lives--time to stand aside for a little while, time to think quietly. Now, if we need such times of solitude, we also need friendship in all its forms, from the postman's cheery greeting to the companionship of close friends, through the brightness and sparkle of an enjoyable social occasion and squeeze of hand in time of gloom. I think the American writer Henry David Thoreau summed it up beautifully, when he wrote: "I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society." A thought:Remember that you are the weaver of dreams.

I am not of the Islamic faith, but have been searching for an explanation of "Ismailism' in order to understand a friend who was brought up under this sect. Other web sites I have come across have been difficult for me to understand, as they make references that are unfamiliar, and seem to depreciate Ismailism in an offhand sort of way. I have prided myself in seeking to understand other people's cultures and religious heritage, but in my arrogance overlooked a very vast and important faith in this world, simply because my own Western culture seems to revile it. Without educating myself, I would be just as guilty as those people who, out of ignorance, pass judgment nonetheless. Thank you again, on valuing education and allowing me to broaden my worldview through the use of your site.

Dear Nina: TO LOOK LIFE WITH CHEERFUL DISPOSITION: I tell my friends who encounter ups and downs, sunshine and sunset in life(who doesn't) to look life with cheerful disposition. Life hasn't gone smoothly for many of us. Once I head a good advice from a friend by him quoting 19th century writer Samuel Butler: "Life is like playing violin solo in public, and learning the instrument as one goes on." We all have been playing few wrong notes, but we must hope to play better tomorrow, and I am sure we will. A good way to look at life. When storm rage and the ship of life is tossed on the waves, remember Allah is still there at the helm- the Captain of all.Friendship is the breathing rose, with sweetness in every fold and petal.

Dear Nina: HECTIC PACE OF MODERN LIFE:`The image of the harried overachiever is ever-present in today's stressful society. The typical is the person running for the subway when another will follow in a few minutes, the executive who is obsessed by goals to be met and surpassed, the doer who is compulsive about staying ahead of the pack, indeed who goes out of his way to take risks that give him a charge. WHY? through, is our age such a hectic one?It is far cry from the UTOPIA of tranquillity with plenty of leisure time that industrialization was supposed to bring. The "less work and more play for everyone" predicted by many economists, sociologists, and futurists simply hasn't worked out.Work consumes as much of the average wage earner's time as it did generation ago, while commuting to and from work takes more. Rather than simplify life, modern technology has contributed towards making it more hectic. Mass communications and mass transportation are doing us in. We are put under more pressure because we have created artificial reasons to be in a hurry. We are digging ourselves into our own high-pressure graves.THE ART OF LIVING CONSISTS IN KEEPING EARTHLY STEP TO HEAVENLY MUSIC.

Dear Nina: IN THE BEST LIGHT:(Wise words): I am sure that we all some time have heard or read something that Winston Churchill once said, but we near hear much about his wife and what she said. Well, I have just found something that this beautiful and intelligent woman said about FRIENDSHIP. "Treat your friends as you do to your pictures, place them in the best light."(2)SEIZE THE DAY: Have you ever had times when you have been bored with your existence? Nothing much of interest seem to happen and you begin to feel a little sorry for yourself? I think we have all had periods like this, and yet when we turn the calender we realise how quickly time is flying. Centurieds ago the Romans had the right idea and I understand one of their favourite expressions was "Carpe diem": Seize the day." Perhaps this is omething we should learn to do. Make the most of each new tomorrow.Look for the beauty around us, listen to music, lend a helping hand whereever we can. Dear Nina: LOOKING AT EVER CHANGING PATTERN OF ISLAMIC WORLD: We must look at the importance of ever-changing pattern of economic and social situation from historical perspective. On religious leadership in MEMOIRS OF AGA KHAN, we read the emphasis the Late Imam placed and emphasised role of religious leadership. In his words:"The headship of a religious community spread over considerable part of the world surface--from Cape Town to Khasgar, from Syria to Singapore--cannot be sustained in accordance with any cut-and-dried system, moral condition, material facilities, national aspirations and outlook profoundly differing historical background, have to be borne vastly in mind and the necessary mental adjustment made." In our IMAM KARIM SHAH we see the evidence of that creative and dynamic outlook with which he is so richly endowed-- an outlook with which he grapples with the problems of the day in the values and ideals that have been consecrated for us by the highest traditions of the Muslim cililization and culture.

Dear Nina:SOME POINTS OF WISDOM FROM BILL GATES' BOOK!? (1)Life is not fair; get used to it.(2)The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. (3)You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.(4)If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure. (5)Flipping burgers is notbeneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity.(6)If you mess up,it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.(7)Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try "delousing" the closet in your own room.

Dear Nina: ISLAM IN AFRICA:(One example): Muslim communities dwelling in the midst of fetish-worshippers, represent, a definitely higher faith and civilization and present a striking contrast to the pagan tribes demoralised by the European gin traffic. The contrast has been well indicated by Joseph Thomson, a traveller. Says he in reference to the degraded condition of the tribes of the lower Niger: "In steamer up in Niger, I aw little in the first 200 miles to alter my views; for they luxuriated in congenial union, fetishism, cannibalism and gin trade.-"But as I left behind me the low-lying coast region, and found myself near souther boundry of what is called the Central Sudan, I observed an ever-increaing improvement in the appearance and in the character of the native; cannibalism disappeared, fetishism followed in its wake; the gin trade largely gone; while on the other hand. clothes became more voluminous and decent, cleanliness the rule, while their outward more dignified, bearing still further signs of moral regeneration. Everything indicated a leavening of some higher element, an element that was clearly taking a deep hold on African nature and making him a new man. That element, you will perhaps be surprised to lean, is ISLAM."

Dear Nina: HAVE WE EVER THOUGTH OF GIVING CREDIT TO OUR PARENTS FOR WHAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE TODAY?I read a passage in the biography of a populat actress,Patricia Hayes. To crown her distinguiashed career, her services to the British theatre were rewarded when Queen bestowed on her the O.B.E. After cerimony when photos were being taken in the courtyard of the Palace, a man approached Patricia and said."I am delighted to see you win this very deserved award. You must be extremely proud." "I am extremely proud," came the prompt reply, "but it is not I who should be receiving it. The person who should have had this award is my FATHER, George Fredrick Hayes, who spent all his life enduring a really boring job, in order that I should be able to have my career,"A frine tribute to a loving father froma loving daughter.Do we remember how our own parents slogged in life so that we can have better life!

Dear Nina:THE APPROCHING MATURE AGE:CALMNESS:MATURITY:WISDOM! A woman collegue of mine, I saw her looking at the mirror at library where I was doing my reserach, and she turned away quickly without saying anything. I knew what she was thinking about, because I have done the same thing myself on occasion. We find afew more grey hairs and another litttle wrinkle each time we look at ourselves. On one occasion I told her a story- whether true or not I donn't know- of how Queen Elizabeth I of England once looked in her mirror, then retreated from her reflection. She had not been growing old gracefully, and banned mirrors from all her palaces thereafter. However, when we look in the mirror, we should surely thank Allah for the calmness and wisdom that maturity brings, knowing that we can always remain young at heart if not in body. We must never be afraid of the passing of time, for it has many things to commend it.(1) A THOUGHT: Whether, therefore we eat, of drink, or whatever we do, we should do all to the glory of Allah!

Dear Nina:MARTYRDOM OF OUR IMAM HUSSEIN:"One by one the defenders fell, until at last there remained but the grandson of the Prophet. Wounded and dying he dragged himself to the river-side for a last drink; they turned him off with arrows from there. And as he entered his tent he took his infant child in his arms; him they transfixed with a dart. The stricken father bowed his head to heaven. Able no more to stand up against his pitiless foes, alone and weary, he seated himself at the door of his tent. One of the women handed him a cup of water to assuage his burning thirst; as he raised to his lips he was pierced in the mouth with a dart; and his son and nephew were killed in his arms. He lifted his hands to heaven--they were full of blood,- and he uttered a funeral prayer fore the living and the dead.Raising himself for one desperate charge, the Ommeyyyads attacked him. But faint with loss of blood, he soon sank to the ground, then the murderous crew rushed upon the dying hero.. They cut off his head, trampled on his body, and subjected it to every ignominy in the old spirit of Hind. They carried the martyr's head to the castle of Kufa, the inhuman Obaidullah struck it on the mouth with a cane:"Alas! exclaimed an aged Musaluman,"on these lips have I seen the lips of Apostle of God."

Dear Nina:NO POWER ON EARTH CAN CHANGE ISMAILIS' LOYALTY TO THEIR IMAMS:Without Imam,Ismailis cease to be Ismailis. We Ismailis know the amount of suffering we went through on account of our beliefs. But Imams' sacrifices have been greater.IMAM SHAH KHALILULLAH ALI ,the 45th Imam was murdered by some Twelver fanatics in Yezd,Iran in 1233A.H.(A.D.1817).He was born in Kerman in A.D.1749.At that time the ruler of Iran was Shah Fatehali of Qacha'rs dynesty who occupied the Peacock Throne of Iran in A.D.1798.King Fatehali Qachar prompty sentenced the assassins of our Imam and their leader Mullah Hussein Yezdi to death and greatly comforted Imam Hassanali Shah and the Ismailis. He gave his daughter in marriage and decorated him with the title of Aga Khan-meaning Lord of Chief-.Imam Hassanali Shah Mabap was the first Aga Khan. The daughter which the King gave in marriage was none other than Lady Ali Shah. The account of the murder of Shah Khalilullah Ali is a very pathetic tale.

This is a beautiful site. The guestbook page is like a garden with beautiful flowers. Flowers from all over the world. And then amongst the flowers are the unfortunate weeds. Stubborn ugly weeds that deserve to be plucked out once in a while. Beautiful flowers, when you look down and see the miserable weeds, say a prayer so that Allah may have mercy upon them. These weeds cannot bear to see the beauty of the flowers. Yet they are created by Allah so that the world can see the difference between weeds and beautiful flowers.

Dear Nina:PRAY!COULD SOMEBODY TELL ME WHO IS A TRUE MUSLIM? It was during ther Presidentship of ISKANDER MIRZA in Pakistan a riot broke out between two factions of Sunni Muslims. At that time I was in Pakistan. The riot got out of hand and the President had to call the army. He gave a strict order that to shoot and shoot at the beard. He felt this riot was instigated by Mullas.Thereafter a Commission was appointed to find the causes of riots among Muslims. The Commission travelled and interviewed all the cross section of Muslims and also its religious heads and asked one pertinent question:"Please define according to your tenets, who is a true Muslim?" The swenty-three sects of Islam and others gave their definition.I read the Report and interestingly the last chapter was an eye-catcher. The Commission says that with these difinitions, we travelled from lemngth and bredth of Pakistan and we couldn't find one true Muslim to fit these definitions.Islamic Uma is connsituted of varied nationals with their traditions; but follow Islam to their best knowledge of the Holy Book.A Chinese following would be different from that of Rajput Muslims.
